Volvo truck: upgrade i-save system to improve transportation fuel economy

The new upgrade of Volvo truck i-save system not only reduces fuel consumption, but also greatly reduces carbon dioxide emissions, and provides a more comfortable driving experience. I-save system upgrades engine technology, control software and aerodynamic design. All the upgrades are aimed at achieving a common goal – maximizing fuel efficiency.

Volvo truck has further upgraded the i-save system carried by Volvo FH, which ensures the optimization of the engine combustion process by matching the fuel injector, compressor and camshaft with its unique new wavy piston. This technology not only reduces the total weight of the engine, but also reduces the internal friction. In addition to upgrading the high-performance turbocharger and oil pump, the air, oil and fuel filters have also achieved better performance with their patented technology.

“Starting with the already excellent engine, we are committed to improving many key details, which are integrated to help achieve better fuel efficiency. These upgrades are aimed at obtaining more available energy from every drop of fuel.” Helena AlSi, vice president of product management of Volvo truck powertrain, said.

More stable, more intelligent and faster

The core of the i-save system is the d13tc engine – the 13 liter engine is equipped with Volvo composite turbocharging technology. The engine can adapt to long-term high gear low speed driving, making the driving process more stable and less noise. The d13tc engine can operate efficiently in the full speed range, and the optimal speed is 900 to 1300rpm.

In addition to the hardware upgrade, a new generation of engine management software is also added, which works in conjunction with the upgraded I-Shift transmission. The intelligent upgrade of shift technology makes the vehicle respond faster and the driving experience smoother, which not only improves the fuel economy, but also highlights the handling performance.

I-torque is an intelligent powertrain control software, which analyzes terrain data in real time through the I-see cruise system, so that the vehicle can adapt to the current road conditions, so as to improve fuel efficiency. The I-see system maximizes the kinetic energy of trucks traveling in hilly areas through real-time road condition information. I-torque engine torque control system can control gear, engine torque and braking system.

“In order to reduce fuel consumption, the truck uses the” eco “mode when starting. As a driver, you can always easily obtain the required power, and you can also obtain rapid gear change and torque response from the transmission system.” Helena AlSi continued.

The aerodynamic design of trucks plays a great role in reducing fuel consumption during long-distance driving. Volvo trucks have made many upgrades in aerodynamic design, such as narrower clearance in front of the cab and longer doors.

Since the i-save system came out in 2019, it has been serving Volvo truck customers well. In order to repay customers’ love, a new 420hp engine has been added to the previous 460hp and 500hp engines. All engines are hvo100 certified (hvo100 is a renewable fuel in the form of hydrogenated vegetable oil).

Volvo trucks FH, FM and FMX equipped with 11 or 13 liter Euro 6 engines have also been upgraded to further improve fuel efficiency.

Shift to non fossil fuel vehicles

Volvo Trucks’ goal is that electric trucks will account for 50% of total truck sales by 2030, but internal combustion engines will also continue to play a role. The newly upgraded i-save system provides better fuel efficiency and guarantees the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

“We are committed to complying with the Paris climate agreement and will unswervingly reduce carbon emissions in road freight transport. In the long run, even though we know that electric travel is an important solution to reduce carbon emissions, energy-efficient internal combustion engines will also play an important role in the next few years.” Helena AlSi concluded.
